Act 8
Papa listened carefully to what Rooster Dave had to say. His boy, Tex, was in trouble, he could feel it. Papa thanked the Jamaican for calling the restaurant and told him that they would ensure that he received a reward for his civic duty. David said that it was not necessary, as Tex was his friend, but Papa insisted. Once the call was done, Papa strutted into the main restaurant. The room looked like any other, apart from the fact that the tables were perfectly positioned to see all the exits while you ate. Like most mobsters, they were not afraid to eat in public at their own venue. It was this brazenness that made them so scary.
Papa walked over to a table by the bar where four syndicate men had gathered to eat. They were all enjoying a spread of courgette balls, moussaka, and charcoal-grilled lamb. The feast smelled mouth-wateringly good. The mob recognised good food when they tasted it.
âWe 'ave a lil' problem,â said Papa.
âWhatâs wrong, Papa?â answered Fat Pete.
âItâs the Somali Boyz.â
âThose bozos who wear the clown costumes?â Pete frowned. He disliked them and their business. The family had nothing to do with drugs or prostitution, preferring to stick to the old favourites like gambling and extortion.
âYes, apparently they 'ave captured young Tex. I âave the registration of the car that he was seen being bundled into.â Papa sighed. âCan you meet your police contact and get her to track them down?â
âSure, Papa,â said Fat Pete. âWhat do you want us to do with them?â
âSever their fuckin' heads off!â Papa shouted. He was clearly enraged by the lack of family respect. âThen go and see their boss. Tell that bum that I âava hatred for slave traders. Tell him that if he touches any of my men again, weâll drown the whole fuckâin lot of them, like rats in the Mersey.â
âWith pleasure, Papa.â
âYouâre a good boy, Pete.â Papa squeezed his shoulder with his thick fingers and nodded respectfully to the other men. He then returned to his makeshift office as he struggled to contain his temper.
Pete asked the waiter to pass him the Japanese, Katana sword that was hanging behind the bar. The black, lacquered scabbard had an ornate mother-of-pearl inlay, and the blade could easily compete with the sharpest scalpel. It required craftsmanship and expertise to produce a weapon with such exquisite production value.
âEat up boys, its safari time.â Fat Pete stroked the sword gently, like a beloved family pet.
The three other Mediterranean men looked up from their food and smiled. They were all sharp-dressed and impeccably groomed. Spiro, Valentas, and Bomb-Bomb folded up their white, linen napkins and followed Fat Pete. An attractive young waitress passed them their long, grey, trench coats, along with their short, black, pump-action shotguns. They all casually filed out of the restaurant, looking more like Hollywood actors on a film set, than a well-seasoned, four-man slaughterhouse.
